Doctors reveal eating beets causes… See more

Eating beets causes a completely harmless and well-known phenomenon called beeturia!
Because beets are packed with a natural red-violet pigment called betalain (or betacyanin), consuming them can temporarily tint your urine or stool a pink, red, or reddish-brown color.

What You Need to Know About Beeturia:

  • Who Gets It? Not everyone experiences it—roughly 10% to 14% of people notice it. If your body doesn’t fully break down or neutralize the pigment during digestion, the excess passes through your kidneys and into your urine.
  • Is It Dangerous? No, it is entirely benign. Factors like eating beets on an empty stomach, drinking beet juice, or having slightly lower stomach acid or iron levels can make the color change more pronounced.
  • How Long Does It Last? It usually shows up a few hours after eating beets and completely disappears within 24 to 48 hours.

When to Check with a Doctor:

While pink urine right after eating borscht or a beet salad is almost certainly beeturia, you should consult a doctor if the red color in your urine happens independent of eating beets or if it is accompanied by actual blood, pain, burning during urination, or fatigue (which can sometimes point to underlying issues like iron deficiency or a urinary tract infection).
Did you just enjoy some beets and get a surprise when visiting the restroom?
