Why is it so important not to flush the toilet after every trip to the toilet to urinate?

You may have heard the advice, “If you only urinate, don’t flush every time.” There are a few reasons people suggest this, but not flushing after every trip is not generally necessary for hygiene, and it is not a medical recommendation.

4 Things to Know

1. Saving water

Every flush uses water. Skipping some flushes can reduce water consumption, particularly in homes with older toilets that use more water per flush.

2. Saving money

Using fewer flushes may modestly reduce your water bill, depending on your toilet and how your water is charged.

3. Germs and bathroom hygiene

Flushing can produce droplets and aerosols that may spread microorganisms around the toilet area. Closing the lid before flushing may reduce the spread of larger droplets, although it does not eliminate aerosols. Regular cleaning and handwashing remain important.

4. Urine does not stay fresh indefinitely

Fresh urine is generally low in microorganisms in healthy people, but it is not necessarily sterile. If left standing, urine can develop an unpleasant smell as bacteria break down its components. Leaving urine in a shared toilet for long periods is therefore not ideal.

So, Should You Flush Every Time?

  • At home, using your own toilet: Skipping an occasional flush after urination is generally not a major health risk if the toilet is clean and the bathroom is well ventilated.

  • In a shared bathroom: Flushing after each use is usually more considerate and helps control odours.

  • After a bowel movement: Flush promptly.

  • If someone has a urinary infection or another infection: Follow any specific hygiene advice provided by their healthcare professional.

Bottom line: The main potential benefit of not flushing after every urination is water conservation—not a proven improvement in health. Always wash your hands after using the toilet, and keep the bathroom clean.
