Are You Urinating a Lot at Night? Here’s Why and What You Can Do About It

Waking up twice a night to urinate may signal nocturia, experts say | Fox News

Waking up several times during the night to urinate can be frustrating. It interrupts your sleep, leaves you feeling tired the next day, and can increase the risk of falling when walking to the bathroom in the dark.

The medical term for waking from sleep to urinate is nocturia. It becomes more common with age, but it is not something you should automatically dismiss as a normal part of getting older.

The good news is that many causes are manageable, and the right solution depends on why it is happening.

1. Why might you urinate frequently at night?

1. Drinking too much fluid late in the evening

Water, tea, and other drinks close to bedtime can increase nighttime urine production. Tea and coffee can also irritate the bladder.

2. An enlarged prostate

In men, an enlarged prostate can make it difficult to empty the bladder completely. Other clues include a weak urine stream, difficulty starting, or dribbling.

3. Diabetes or high blood sugar

Excess glucose can cause increased urination and thirst. If you are urinating frequently both day and night, checking your blood sugar may be important.

6. Sleep problems, bladder conditions, or infection

2. What can you do to reduce nighttime urination?

Reduce drinks near bedtime. Drink enough during the day, but try having your last larger drink a few hours before sleep.

Limit evening tea and coffee. Caffeine can increase urinary urgency and disturb sleep.

Elevate swollen legs in the afternoon. If your ankles swell, raising your legs for a period during the day may help move excess fluid before bedtime. Ask your clinician first if you have heart or circulation problems.

Keep a bladder diary. For several days, record when you drink, when you urinate, and how often you wake at night. This can help identify patterns.

Review your medicines with your doctor. Do not stop prescribed medicines or change their timing yourself.

These measures may help, but persistent symptoms deserve assessment to identify the underlying cause.

3. When should you see a doctor?

Arrange a medical appointment if you regularly wake several times each night, particularly if this is new or getting worse. A clinician may recommend a urine test, blood sugar testing, a review of your medicines, or assessment of your bladder or prostate.

Seek urgent medical care if you cannot pass urine, see blood in your urine, or have painful urination accompanied by fever or significant illness.

4. Tell me a little about your symptoms

I can help narrow down the likely causes if you answer these questions.

1. What is your age group?

2. How many times do you urinate at night?

3. Which best describes you?

4. Do you have any other symptoms?
